KADUNA POLYTECHNIC HISTORY
Sir Ahmadu Bello, Sardauna of Sokoto
Late Alhaji Isa Kaita
Kaduna Polytechnic, established in 1956 as Kaduna Technical Institute, traces its origins to a 1951 proposal by the British Government to create technical institutes in Nigeria. It was upgraded to a polytechnic in 1968 under Federal Government Decree No. 20 and later taken over by the federal government in 1991. The institution was founded to provide technical, scientific, commercial, and humanities education, as well as in-service training for public servants. It merged with the College of Science and Technology and the Staff Development Centre, forming its early structure. Key figures like Sir Ahmadu Bello and Alhaji Isa Kaita played pivotal roles in its establishment. Kaduna Polytechnic is one of Nigeria's largest higher institutions and the biggest technical institution in Africa, with over 25,000 students, 138 programs across 44 departments, and nearly 3,000 staff. It operates across four large campuses and attracts a diverse student population. The institution's emblem, the "spider and its web" (Gizogizo), symbolizes resilience and excellence, reflecting its expansive influence. Originally owned by Northern Nigeria's states, it was later federalized. Governed by a Council, the polytechnic is led by a Rector and a management team overseeing its academic and administrative functions. Kaduna Polytechnic has maintained significant growth, upholding its reputation as a leading technical institution in Nigeria and beyond.
